Surface coating requirements for medical devices and drug delivery systems are becoming increasingly complex. Requirements on cleanliness standards are getting higher, surface chemistry more critical and in many cases devices are showing increased sensitivity to topographical and physical features on a nanoscale. If surface properties can be controlled in a precise and repeatable way then product designers do not have to be led by bulk material properties alone. Such methods do exist to control surfaces on a nano to micron scale i.e. gas plasma based technologies.
99% of all engineering components fail as a direct consequence of a surface initiated failure or response.
In most plasma processing chambers, the ionization rate (determined by electron energy) is less than 0.01%
The ionization rate in the core of sun is ~100%
Interaction of device materials with their environment (biocompatibility, drug interactions or general atmosphere), actuation or application forces, durability and shelf life are all dictated by surface properties, chemical, physical or both. Often it is the outermost nanometres or few molecular layers which are of most interest. Increasing trends in device miniaturisation are themselves forcing new innovations in surface technologies and plasma applications.
When dealing with nano-surfaces, understanding the surfaces of interest cannot be overlooked. Appropriate analytical techniques must be adopted. Plasma treatments and depositions are usually in the 1-15nm range for chemical modifications and 15-250nm range for coatings. More widely accepted characterisation techniques such as SEM/EDX (Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersive X-Ray) techniques image on the 10’s of nanometres to micron scale and take 99% of their elemental information from 1μm+ below the surface.
